Udaipur

The lake views are real, but Udaipur is more than a romantic backdrop. City Palace tells the long Mewar story, the lanes below it are full of workshops and small temples, and each waterfront has a different rhythm. Begin early at City Palace, then walk downhill through the old city rather than calling a cab for every short hop. Save a boat ride or Ambrai-side view for late afternoon, when the heat softens. Sajjangarh looks close on a map but needs its own transport and enough time for the climb. The historic core is steep, narrow and difficult for cars. That is frustrating with luggage and wonderful once you are settled. Choose your hotel for access as carefully as for its lake view.
