Hidden Gems in Goa

These are the Goa day trips and offbeat corners that don't show up on most listicles — waterfalls, dance villages, 400-year-old banyan trees, decommissioned reservoirs, the bits of old Bangalore squeezed between flyovers. Most of them sit 30-90 km outside the city, so they work best as a weekend half-day or a Sunday morning escape.

Distances and timings reflect our most recent visits. Several of these places (Hesaraghatta, Chunchi Falls) are seasonal — we've flagged the best months alongside each.

1Tambdi Surla Mahadev Temple

A small 12th-century Kadamba-era Shiva temple of black basalt, tucked deep in the forest near Mollem on the eastern edge of Goa. It's the oldest temple in the state and survived the Portuguese era because of its remote location. Mossy, atmospheric, and almost always empty. Combine it with a Dudhsagar trip.

2Cabo de Rama Fort

A dramatic, largely ruined clifftop fort in far South Goa with sweeping ocean views and hardly any crowds. Older than Portuguese rule, later rebuilt by them. There's a small church inside and a steep path to a quiet viewpoint over the cliffs. One of the most scenic and least-visited spots in the state.

3Divar Island

A rural island in the Mandovi reached by a free ferry from Old Goa, with Portuguese mansions, paddy fields, sleepy villages, and the Our Lady of Compassion church on a hill. A glimpse of Goa before tourism, and a lovely place to cycle or ride a scooter with almost no traffic.

4Butterfly Beach

A tiny, secluded cove near Palolem reachable mainly by boat (or a rough trek). Soft sand, calm water, dolphins offshore, and a fraction of the crowds. Go in the morning, as the last boats back leave in the afternoon. One of the prettiest small beaches in the south.

5Galgibaga (Turtle) Beach

A long, quiet, casuarina-backed beach in the far south that's a protected nesting site for olive ridley turtles. Development is restricted to protect the turtles, so it stays peaceful and undeveloped, the opposite of the northern beaches. Nesting season runs roughly November to February.

6Reis Magos Fort

A beautifully restored 16th-century fort on the north bank of the Mandovi, opposite Panaji, with commanding river views, an art gallery, and well-told history displays. Far quieter than Aguada and one of the best heritage restorations in Goa. A small entry fee applies.

7Arvalem (Harvalem) Waterfalls & Caves

A pretty waterfall near Sanquelim in interior Goa, alongside a set of rock-cut caves believed to date back over a thousand years. Popular with locals, largely missed by beach tourists, and at its best just after the monsoon when the falls are full.

8Netravali & Cotigao (interior South Goa)

The forested interior of the south holds the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary and the Netravali area, with its 'bubbling lake', waterfalls, and quiet trails. A green, wild side of Goa that almost no beach visitor sees, best for nature lovers willing to head inland.

Planning a day trip out of these?

Most of these spots are reachable by car or bike from central Bangalore. The Weekend Getaways section of our Travel Tips chapter covers timings, transport options and what to pack. For sunrise and viewpoint trips, the Best Time to Visit page explains which months these places actually look their best.
