Two days · realistic first visit

Delhi Two-Day Itinerary: Old City and South Delhi

Two days can introduce Delhi, but only if each day has a geographic identity. Give the historic north and centre one day, then move south on day two. Trying to visit every famous monument produces more security lines and traffic than memories.

Old Delhi and the centre on day one
Southern monuments on day two
One major indoor break each day
Keep weather and air quality flexible

The practical plan

1

Day 1 morning — Old Delhi

Begin with the Red Fort or Jama Masjid and a deliberately limited Chandni Chowk walk. Choose the monument that matters most and let the surrounding district supply the rest of the morning.

2

Day 1 lunch — stay near the route

Eat in Old Delhi if the group is comfortable with the intensity, or move toward Connaught Place for a calmer seated break. Do not cross south solely for a restaurant.

3

Day 1 afternoon — central Delhi

Use the Metro toward Connaught Place, Bangla Sahib or a museum, then finish around India Gate and Kartavya Path if weather and current security access suit the plan.

4

Day 2 morning — choose the southern anchor

Start at Humayun’s Tomb for a central-south route or Qutub Minar for a deeper south route. Both are substantial; making both compulsory can turn the day into a transfer exercise.

5

Day 2 afternoon — add one nearby companion

Pair Humayun’s Tomb with Sunder Nursery or Lodhi Garden. Pair Qutub Minar with Mehrauli. A nearby second stop adds more value than a famous attraction across the city.

6

Day 2 evening — leave an exit

Keep dinner flexible and finish near a Metro line or a reliable pickup point. Delayed monument entry, heat or a long lunch should not cause a late race to another ticketed site.

Common questions

Where should a first-time visitor stay?

A Metro-connected central base reduces transfers, but compare the exact station walk, neighbourhood feel and room quality rather than choosing only by district name.

Can I add an Agra day trip?

Yes, but treat it as a separate full day. It does not replace one of the Delhi sightseeing days without leaving major parts of the city unseen.

How should weather change this plan?

In extreme heat, start earlier and use a museum or long lunch at midday. During winter fog or poor air quality, check live conditions and shorten outdoor blocks when needed.
